Calorie counter and food diary

FoodBalance

Coming soon

FoodBalance is a calorie counter and food diary for Android. Log a meal by search, barcode, a label or a photo, pick a portion the way you measure it — an egg by size, a slice, a cup or grams — and see the day's calories, protein, fat and carbs. The diary, weight and targets are kept in a database on your phone.

FoodBalance

A food diary that shows where every number comes from.
Log a meal Search, the barcode scanner, a label read on the phone, recipes and meal templates.
Portions and cooking Egg sizes by region, slices, cups or grams; boiled, baked or fried, and how much oil went in.
Meal photo A photo of the plate gives an estimate with a range; you check each portion before it goes into the diary.
Reminders Breakfast, lunch and dinner at your own times. A reminder stays quiet when that meal is already logged.
The diary lives on your phone On your device

The diary, weight, profile and targets are kept in a database on this phone. Photos for recognition and products for Open Food Facts go through our server only after your consent.

A calm counter Mode without calories hides the numbers. A pause or a day off from counting keeps the streak waiting, and freezes cover empty days.

Food diary

  • Add food by search, by typing a barcode or with the barcode scanner. Products come from the country food databases on the phone and from the open Open Food Facts database.
  • A product that is not found can be added from its label — the nutrition table is read on the phone — or by hand. It stays in Your own foods.
  • Portions as you measure them: egg sizes by region (EU S–XL, US Small–Jumbo or GOST), slices, cups or grams. Cooking methods and an oil slider show how much oil the food took up.
  • Every entry shows where its numbers come from and how they are computed.
  • Recipes and meal templates, estimates for eating out, badges for the allergens you mark in your plan, and a note for each day.
  • Water by the glass, weight with a trend line that smooths out day-to-day jumps, charts of calories, macros, water and weight, and a short summary of the week on Sunday evening.

Photos and Open Food Facts

  • Meal photo: tap Photo next to the search field, and the app lists the foods it found, each with a portion to check and a range of calories. Nothing goes into the diary until you check and save it. Without a connection, a photo can wait and be recognised later.
  • Recipe from photo fills in the recipe builder from a handwritten note, a cookbook page or a screenshot. With FoodBalance Pro, a label that the phone reads poorly can be read on our server.
  • These photos go to our server and from there to Google's Gemini API for recognition — only after you agree on a consent screen, and only for a profile of age 18 or older. Each photo is reduced and stripped of its metadata before it is sent. The features are not offered in every country.
  • Free version: 2 meal photos a day (30 a month) and 2 recipes from photos a month. FoodBalance Pro: up to 50 meal photos a day.
  • Send to Open Food Facts: when you save a new product, you can choose to add it to the open database, and with a separate consent a photo of its nutrition table. You can also report an error in a product's data. Contributions go under the app's account, not under your name.

Reminders, widgets and Health Connect

  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner reminders with your own time, days, sound and vibration. Smart skip keeps a reminder quiet when that meal is already logged, and Exact timing is an option you turn on yourself.
  • The Ring widget on the home screen; with Pro, meals and water widgets as well.
  • Health Connect has a switch for each kind of data: weigh-ins both ways, meals and water written there, and the day's steps shown on Today. With Pro, part of the day's active calories can be added to the target.
  • Move a diary, your own foods, recipes and weight history from another app's export or from Health Connect, with a preview first and Undo import after.
  • Export to JSON and CSV at any time. On a new phone, “I have a backup” on the first screen restores the backup file.
  • 12 interface languages; kcal or kJ, grams or ounces, and a region set apart from the language. Light and dark themes, Large view, and two panes split at the fold on foldable phones.

Privacy

  • The diary, weight, profile, targets and settings are stored in a database on your phone. Android backup to Google Drive is switched off: the copies are the files you export yourself or, with Pro, automatic backups to a folder you choose.
  • What reaches the network: product lookups in Open Food Facts (a barcode or search text, the country and the language), product images, a weekly refresh of cached products from your diary (barcodes only), downloads of country food databases, Google Play for purchases, and the photos and contributions you choose to send through our server.
  • Our server receives no diary, weight or profile. With a photo the app sends a random installation identifier and a Play Integrity token, not your name. The server streams the photo to Google and keeps no copy; Google processes it as our data processor, does not use it to improve its products and keeps it for 55 days only to detect abuse.
  • The current build contains no advertising, analytics or crash-reporting SDK. Google's ML Kit components for barcodes and text report diagnostics about themselves to Google; per Google's disclosure, images are not among that data.
  • A support letter is a draft in your own mail app: the app shows the whole diagnostic report first, and you send it yourself. The report leaves out food names, barcodes, weight and targets.
  • Profile → Data and database → Erase all data deletes the data on the phone, and uninstalling the app removes it too. The privacy policy describes every data flow in detail.

Free, with an optional Pro

  • Free: the diary and the day's ring, search, your own foods, portions and cooking methods, water, weight with the trend, the Ring widget, Health Connect for weight, meals, water and steps, moving a diary from another app, export to JSON and CSV, and Mode without calories.
  • Free limits: the barcode scanner 10 a day and the label scanner 5 a day, both without a limit for the first 14 days; typing a barcode and search have no limit. 5 recipes and 3 meal templates, charts for 7 days, 7 nutrient fields, reminders for breakfast, lunch and dinner plus 1 of your own, 3 eating-out estimates a day, and 5 country food databases switched on at once.
  • FoodBalance Pro adds an adaptive target from your weight, 28 nutrients, charts for any period, targets by day of the week, a monthly report and PDF for any period, meals and water widgets, up to 6 adult profiles, automatic backup to your folder, active calories in your daily target, and palettes, AMOLED black and app icons.
  • Pro also reads hard labels on our server, allows up to 50 meal photos a day and up to 9 country food databases at once, and removes the limits on scans, recipes, meal templates, eating out, and water and custom reminders.
  • Pro is a monthly or yearly subscription, or a lifetime purchase. Google Play takes the payment and shows the price for your country; the app does not see your card details.

Health and care

  • FoodBalance is not a medical device and does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. Calorie figures, targets and projections are estimates based on general formulas (Mifflin–St Jeor, NASEM) and open sources such as EFSA, USDA and WHO.
  • Talk to a healthcare professional before changing your diet, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a chronic condition, or have experienced disordered eating.
  • If food feels hard, “I'm struggling with food” in the Profile tab lists free helplines and lets you turn the numbers off or pause reminders for a week.
  • FoodBalance is made for adults: it creates no profile when the year of birth shows an age under 18.
  • FoodBalance is in testing before its public release. Write to foodbalance@gi-gante.com about anything that does not work the way you expect.
